Summarized: Hitman Reborn licensing dilema

In short, FUNimation has exercised a power-of-attorney agreement to remove fansubbed videos of Katekyo Hitman Reborn! (along with other anime titles) on behalf of d-rights Inc. (Japanese copyright holders of shows like Katekyo Hitman Reborn! and Nabari no Ou), even though the show hasn’t been licensed in the US yet (apparently FUNimation is working on working out a licensing agreement to gain rights to dub and release the show in the US, but this process will most likely take up to a year to be finalized).

Yuurisan Subs has recieved a “cease and desist” notice from FUNimation and has since then dropped the series. Other sub groups like Shinsen-Subs have also recieved such a notice and have dropped the series from their list of ongoing projects as well.

Most likely, another group will pick up the series and begin subbing it for another 3 episodes (or less) before they receive a notice as well. Then another group will most likely pick it up, and the cycle will continue.

All is not lost:

There is the manga. I suggest that everyone starts reading Katekyo Hitman Reborn as the manga releases will continue without any problems.
Like I said before, other groups will probably pick it up. Even if it is just a random Japanese speaking person who is able to use Adobe After Affects, or whatever program he/she prefers.
You can always wait a few years until the English dubbed version catches up to where we are at now. (joke).

Either way… We’ll see how this plays out.

Hitman Reborn 96 Notice!

I know a lot of you have been wondering… “The episode aired on Saturday. What’s taking so long?”

Well… Here’s basically what happened…

It looks like FUNimation is now working to uphold the copyrights held by the Japanese producers of the anime Hitman Reborn. That means that even though no United States company has any copyright on the series, subbing groups are still obligated by law to abide by the copyrights held by the Japanese copyright holders.

Looks like it may be a while before we see any subbed episodes of Hitman Reborn. Yuurisan Subs (the major subbing group for Katekyo Hitman Reborn) has been forced to drop the series by FUNimation.

So far no other subbing group is releasing subs for the anime series, (Shinsen Subs has dropped the series and Kesenai Subs hasn’t made any recent releases, so they probably dropped it as well). I highly doubt any other subbing group will challenge the copyright system that has recently become active, so look out for any more subbed episodes of Katekyo Hitman Reborn, but don’t expect too much.

This would be a great opportunity for all of you anime lovers to switch over and read the manga. The story is the same and it’s just as entertaining to read it as to watch it, although it takes a lot less than 20-25 minutes to get through a chapter each week.
